PAUL BUNYAN & BABE THE BLUE OX
Bemidji, Minnesota
Contributed by Rod & Judy Ness of Hermantown, Minnesota

Paul Bunyan & Babe

Rod leaning against Paul Bunyan

Paul Bunyan and his large blue companion Babe really get around. Various towns claim to be his birthplace. Bangor, Maine and Bemidji, Minnesota seem to be the most resolute in their defense of this claim. This roadside attraction on the shore of Lake Bemidji has drawn photographers in droves since its erection in 1936. Cyril M. Dickinson and Jim Payton are credited with creating this popular photo op. Paul Bunyan is nearly 20 feet tall. Babe measures in at 10, and he's almost 23 feet long.

And just so you know: Bemidji is also known as the Curling Capital of the USA and home to the 2006 Olympic champions.
